    About the Best of the Show – Diamond Pentaward 2009

    The greatest creative ideas are also the simplest. There’s nothing more banal (hygienic and practical) nowadays than paper tissues. Kleenex has emerged as the uncontested leader in this field. Up to now, the boxes too were banal, at most decorative. But now Kleenex (Kimberley-Clark Corporation) has broken the code and offers a fresh combination of structure and graphics in perfect harmony, christened “slice of summer.” A triangular box superbly illustrated – by Los Angeles-based illustrator Hiroko Sanderswith juicy fruits, watermelon, orange or lemon that look enticing enough to eat!

    The international jury of the Pentawards made no mistake, because without any consultation, each of the 12 members and the chairman gave this creation the highest marks.

    Here are the thoughts of Lars Wallentin, one member of the Jury:

    “A professional designer appreciates something that is attractive, surprising, new, simple and devoid of useless information. The Kleenex “slice of summer” boast all of this at once. This packaging shows great maturity, because the consumer is not bombarded with information that he neither really needs nor wants.

    I would like to have these Kleenex boxes on my desk, in the kitchen, in my car. I find them very attractive, full of joy and freshness. I want to go out and buy this packaging. And I wish to thank Kimberly-Clark. Because I am a packaging design professional, but also a consumer.”

    A propos the Best of the Show – Diamond Pentawards 2008
    PIPER HEIDSIECK Rosé Sauvage by VIKTOR & ROLF – Upside Down…
    A bottle that rests on the neck, the neck and front labels and cap foil reversed!

    “How do you do something new with something timeless? We had only one answer: reverse the proportions” This is how the two Dutch fashion designers Viktor & Rolf express it.
    And it is exactly this simple but oh-so-creative idea that won over the international jury of the Pentawards, the first worldwide competition devoted uniquely to packaging design.
    For in fact, if there is indeed a domain in which tradition reigns, it is that of champagne.
    So the designers kept all the traditional graphic features of champagne (bottle, cork, ice bucket, glass, and labels) but thought that if champagne could turn one’s head, it was only necessary to reverse all these visual elements to amplify this impression, and especially to differentiate the Piper Heidsieck brand from its competitors by recreating the packaging of the champagne.
    The idea of working with such an exciting signature as Viktor & Rolf is born from a strategic and creative design management partnership between Piper Heidsieck and BETC Design. It is this creativity in support of packaging, also expressed throughout the communication (the site will also spin your head around) that won over the Pentawards jury. The bottles of Pieper Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage signed by Viktor & Rolf were launched on the market at the end of October 2007 in several duty free shops and in exclusive bars and wine bars. This is therefore a limited-time edition.
    The glass bottles are covered by a sleeve produced by Sleever International, a leading global company in this very innovative area of packaging design

    Swinckels is a new concept in beer. It’s a fresh, unpasteurised premium pilsener beer which is kept cool from the moment it is produced and has a shorter shelf life than conventional beers.
    What makes Swinckels special? The bottle shape, label and colours have been designed to reinforce the brand’s freshness and high quality. The bottle neck’s signature flat panel feature is not just tactile and memorable it carries the label which doubles as a breakable seal for the cap, emphasing the product’s quality and freshness. The clear glass bottle shows off the pure golden colour, which is light when at its best. Black, in combination with the gold and silver graphic elements, enforces the premium positioning. The Swinkel family has seven generations of impressive credibility in the brewing industry. The heritage claim, SINDS 1680, is magnified through the beer itself. The brand name, signature of approval and use of the prestigious family crest embossed on the bottle reflects their personal pride in the quality standard.
