What creations can be entered for Pentawards 2017?

All packaging, or lines of packaging, created or released to market anywhere in the world after 1st January 2016.

All works submitted must have been created or produced (launched) after 1st January 2016, in any country. A physical package must be available (produced) before 30th June 2017 (except for Concept categories).

You can enter the concept category by designing a packaging solution for an exciting company or just as a pure concept. The work must be original and not previously marketed or created.

Should we send product samples to participate?

No, you only need to upload images for now (.jpg – RGB).
If you are selected as a nominee, you will be asked to send the actual packaging (30th June 2017).
Not needed for Concept categories.

Who can enter?

Anyone (individuals, free-lance contractors, employees), design or advertising agencies, brand owners, product or packaging producers (students for Concept categories) who can claim the creation and/or the marketing of packaging, anywhere in the world. In fact, anyone who is associated with the creation or marketing of packaging.

Enter your creation in the category that you consider the most suitable. If deemed necessary, the jury will assign it to another category or create a specific category for it.

What is the final date for entry?

The competition will open on the Monday 20 February 2017.
Entries will close on the Friday 7 April 2017 at midnight, GMT.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO extension of the registration deadline.

How much does it cost to enter?

The amount payable per entry in a category is as follows:

EARLY BIRD 20 February to 3 March 2017 | €145

REGULAR 4 March to 24 March 2017 | €195

LATECOMERS 25 March to 31 March 2017 | €245

VERY LAST CHANCE 1 to 7 April 2017 | €295

STUDENTS: 20 February to 7 April 2016 | €30

Friday 7 April 2017 will be the very last day.

Is it possible to pay by bank transfer?

 No, only on-line payments by credit card or Paypal are accepted.

What needs to be provided, along with your entry?

In order to successfully enter your creation, you will need to provide the following:

  • Your Full Name (First and Last)
  • The name of your company, agency, studio or school
  • A physical address. This can be your company, agency, studio, or home address.
  • Up to 5 photos (or rendering images) (square size) of your creation. All images must be JPG format in RGB, with a maximum file size of 1.5 MB, no ZIP.
  • Brand and sub-brand, name of the project
  • Short description of your project...what type of product it is and the creative inspiration behind the packaging (be compact)
  • Credits. Who participated to the project (this will be printed on your certificate and in the Pentawards book).
  • A personal email address and a website address
  • Phone number
  • Read, understand and approve the competition's rules.

How will the work be judged?

The Pentawards are judged by a highly esteemed panel of 12 industry experts, and prizes will be awarded based on Quality of Creativity, Innovation, Branding, and Quality of Execution. Jurors cannot vote for their own creations or those of their company.

The jury is composed of world-renowned experts in packaging design and marketing. They come from Europe, America, and the Asia-Pacific region. As packaging-design experts, they will individually judge the works entered in accordance with their relevance and creativity. In light of the results, the organisers and Chairman of the jury will meet to decide on cases of dead heat or other arbitration issues. The members of the jury will have no right to vote for their own creations nor those presented by their own company. The judges' decision is final.

Because of the different categories and subcategories, each work will be in competition with comparable works. Packagings for drinks will not be compared with packagings for cheese. But cereal packagings will be judged against other cereal packagings.

When will the results be announced?

The jury will announce their decision at the end of May 2017 and the nominees will be personally informed by e-mail.

Nominees will have until 9th June 2017 to send to Pentawards (London, UK) the actual packaging (except for the categories "Conceptual Creations").
Then, on June 30th at the latest, the nominees will be personally informed about the level of their Pentaward (Nomination, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond).

All entries are to kept confidential until the Pentawards Trophy Ceremony.

What types of award are given?

Each subcategory will receive awards up to a maximum of two Bronze, two Silver and one Gold Pentawards.
For each of the 5 major categories, a Platinum Pentaward will be conferred.
The one and only Diamond Pentaward (Best of the Show) will be awarded to the best creation, across all categories.
However, the jury reserves the right not to give an award in any Pentawards category should they deem the general quality of entries insufficient.

What will the winners receive?

Diamond Pentaward 

The winner of the one and only Diamond Pentaward, Best of the Show, will receive:

* A personal invitation to attend, free of charge, the official Pentawards Ceremony and the cocktail party/dinner that will follow.
* The superb and unique “Diamond Trophy”
* An official certificate

The Diamond Pentaward winner will receive, in addition to his trophy,  a multi-year license to the amazing Esko 3D Packaging Design software (value: over 5.000,- Euro)

Platinum Pentawards

Each of the winners of the 5 Platinum Pentawards, Best of the 5 major categories (Beverages, Food, Body, Other markets & Luxury) will receive:

* A personal invitation to attend, free of charge, the official Pentawards Ceremony and the cocktail party/dinner that will follow.
* A “Platinum Trophy”
* An official certificate

Gold Pentawards

* A “Gold Trophy”
* An official certificate
If you are not able to attend on that evening, you can order (purchase) their trophy from the Pentawards site. The certificate will be sent to them free of charge.

Silver Pentawards

* A “Silver Trophy”
* An official certificate
If you are not able to attend on that evening, you can order (purchase) their trophy from the Pentawards site. The certificate will be sent to them free of charge.

Bronze Pentawards

* A “Bronze Trophy”
* An official certificate
If you are not able to attend on that evening, you can order (purchase) their trophy from the Pentawards site. The certificate will be sent to them free of charge.

* An official certificate will be sent to them free of charge.

All winners will be presented on the Pentawards site with a link to their respective sites.

All winners of the Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Pentawards will be featured in “The Package Design Book #5” which will be published by TASCHEN and available as of November 2018 (TBC) (with a contribution of €125 to the technical costs per winning design)

Where will the Pentawards 2017 ceremony be held?

The 11th official Pentawards Ceremony will be held in Barcelona on the Saturday 23 September 2017.

When will the certificates and trophies be forwarded to the winners?

The trophies (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond Pentawards) will be presented in person during the official ceremony.

Winners of the Bronze, Silver and/or Gold Pentawards who do not come to pick up their trophy during official ceremony, will be able to order (purchase) it on the Pentawards website.

The Platinum and Diamond trophies as well as all the certificates will be shipped free of charge after the Pentawards ceremony, before the end of November.

Will it be possible to obtain additional certificates and trophies?

When will the results be made public?

The Pentawards winners will be revealed during the official Pentawards trophy ceremony which will be held in Barcelona the Saturday 23 September 2017. 

The list of winners will be published on the Pentawards website the night of the ceremony, along with a press release announcing the winners to the media, worldwide.

Will the winners be advertised?


The winning creations (not the nominees) will appear on this site shortly after being announced at the Pentawards 2017 trophy ceremony, with a link to the respective sites of the winners.

In the PRESS:

Press releases will be sent to the world press and to the major players in the profession, with extensive coverage in the written press, sites and blogs.

In the TASCHEN Book #5:

TASCHEN, the famous art and design book publisher, will publish the 5th volume on the Pentawards in the autumn 2018, featuring the Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze Pentawards 2017 and 2018 (nominees not included) in a 400+page, hardcover edition printed at more than 10,000 copies and distributed throughout the world.

Contribution to the technical cost: 125€ per winning design and, as a Pentaward winner, you will receive one copy of this reference book per winning design.

Is it possible to become a member of the Pentawards panel?

The Pentawards panel is composed of 12 professionals from the field of packaging design who can remain in their posts for 4 years at most. One fourth of the panel is renewed each year, and the geographic distribution (the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific) must be maintained. The panel is composed in part of designers who specialise in packaging design, and in part of marketing managers or designers who work for large corporations that place products on the market.  The designers must have received a Gold, Platinum or Diamond Pentaward in the past.

The symbol of the competition is a pentagon. Why?

 For 5 reasons :

  1. Pentawards gives 5 different prizes (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond).
  2. Five, like the 5 fingers of the hand, the most perfect tool of the human being and of the designer in particular…
  3. Five, like our 5 senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell).
  4. The pentagon is the external and internal form of the pentagram, the ancient and universal symbol of beauty.
  5. The pentagon is the original form of the historic centre of Brussels, capital of Belgium and capital of Europe, where the idea of the World Pentawards took shape.

In the Pentawards logo, the white pentagon is the centre of a circle which represents the world.
